FLYBRARY

Enhancing Passenger Experience and Promoting Reading Culture at Airports

  1. Background: With the growth in air travel, passengers are required to report well in advance of their flights, resulting in considerable waiting time at airport terminals. However, opportunities for intellectual engagement and recreational activities during this period remain limited.
  2. Overview of the Initiative: The Flybrary initiative is a community-driven library concept introduced in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and community organisations to promote reading culture and enhance passenger experience at airports. It operates on a “Take a Book – Leave a Book” model, enabling passengers to pick up books for reading during their journey or carry them along for future reading and return them during a subsequent visit. The bookshelves are accessible within airport terminals without membership fees or formal borrowing procedures, relying on voluntary participation and mutual trust.
  3. Implementation Status: As on date, Flybraries have been established at 72 Airports Authority of India (AAI) airports. The initiative provides a cost-effective passenger amenity that encourages reading culture, promotes community participation and offers an alternative to excessive digital engagement during transit.
  4. Key Objectives and Benefits:
    • Enhanced Passenger Experience: Converts waiting time into a productive, engaging and relaxing activity.
    • Promotion of Reading Culture: Provides convenient access to books for passengers from diverse backgrounds.
    • Community Participation: Encourages voluntary book donations and the sharing of knowledge among travellers.
    • Cultural Engagement: Transforms airports into more engaging public spaces beyond their primary role as transit hubs.
    • Cost-Effective Implementation: Offers a low-cost passenger amenity supported largely by donated books and minimal infrastructure.
